Hick Fest 2008

No one could have said it better than John Denver in his song "Take Me Home, Country Roads". The line goes:

"Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain momma
Take me home, country roads"

This past weekend I went to West Virginia to participate in a time honored tradition: Hick Fest.

Ms. Mary McMullen and Ms. Mandy Jensen put this little trip together, renting a cabin, stuffing it with tons of food and people, and creating an enjoyable weekend.

This was how it played out:

Friday: Drive to West Virginia. LONG drive, wish I could have seen the scenery, but it was pitch black out there.

Saturday: Good Morning Hick Fest. After a fabulous meal of waffles, we headed out to the festival. We saw ax throwing, wood chopping, a Queen Laurel Beauty Pageant, and some mean karaoke. And don't forget the ice cream eating contest. It was a very full day!

Sunday: Woke up, went on a ski lift to the top of a mountain and walked around a bit. Then Ashley, Jim and I went horse back riding. Too much fun! Thank you Spade, Zeke, and Skippy for lending us your backs for the ride. We then headed back to Hick Fest and saw parts of the fiddle and banjo contest. Does it get any better? Then evening was rounded out by trying to find the lost moon and singing along to Disney songs.

Monday: Tubing on the Cheat River. We thought that this would be a fast moving river, rapids, etc. Nope. There were times when I didn't think that we were moving! Hours later, we made it back, packed up the cars, and headed home. We did stop in Wardensville for some authentic local food. And we got what we asked for. But, they ran out of gravy, so that took out half the menu.
And thank you Ashlee for being a great bedmate!!

Stay tuned as I will be posting up a video about Hick Fest as soon as I have more pictures.
And I took the Praxis I: Math yesterday and passed with a 176. Its official, I am on my way to becoming a teacher!
